Riserva naturale del Bosco di Malabotta
A pochi passi da Roccella Valdemone, paesino aggrappato su un costone roccioso, meta di appassionati di free climbling, si trova lo splendido bosco di Malabotta. Quest’area, posta sull’alta valle Alcantara guarda a non molta distanza ai Nebrodi ed alle Rocche del Crasto. La Riserva abbraccia i Comuni di Francavilla, Floresta e Patti.
L'ente gestore è l'Azienda Foreste. Sotto una fitta vegetazione boschiva composta da antichi ed alti esemplari di cerri, noccioleti, faggi, querce, pini, scorre un ruscello, il torrente Licopedi di Roccella, che poco più giù confluisce nell’Alcantara.
Il Bosco di Malabotta (700 - 1300 m slm) è un'area di eccezionale valore naturalistico. Si tratta di una vasto comprensorio naturale fra Roccella Valdemone e Montalbano Elicona, dove su sedimenti ora argilloso-arenacei, ora su rocce alluvionali e calcaree si è spontaneamente formato un ecosistema ricchissimo di flora e fauna. La riserva è punteggiata da numerose alture: Pizzo Castelluzzo, Serra Castagna, Pizzo Daniele e Pizzo Galera, ora rivestiti di fitto bosco, con alberi centenari, ora aperti a vaste radure abitate dai suini neri, ora torrenti impervi in cui si riproduce la rara trota macrostigma. In genere il bosco è costituito da querce, pini, noccioli, castagni, pioppi e aceri, interrotti da splendidi esemplari di agrifoglio.
Più in basso, il leccio .Il sottobosco conta il biancospino, la rosa selvatica , lo sparzio spinoso ed offre riparo a volpi e cinghiali, donnole e martore. Significativa la presenza del topo quercino. Per l'avifauna, gheppi e falchi pellegrini, poiane, aquile reali, sparvieri.
Deviando dalla strada che conduce al bosco di Malabotta, facilmente si accede alle Rocche dell’Argimusco, altopiano che si eleva ad un’altezza superiore ai mille metri , con vista sull’Etna, lo Stretto di Messina e le isole Eolie, su cui si innalzano megaliti di calcare che vento e pioggia hanno eroso conferendo loro strane forme. Un'altra interessante escursione è quella al bosco Pittari, nel Comune di Malvagna. Aree di interesse: Caserma Forestale Malabotta: partendo dall’area di parcheggio di Monte Cerreto, scendendo sulla destra, dopo aver attraversato un fitto bosco misto, c’è un’area attrezzata ed una fonte.

Wood of Malabotta
A few steps from Roccella Valdemone, a village clinging to a rocky ridge, a destination for free climbling enthusiasts, is the splendid Malabotta forest. This area, located in the high Alcantara valley, not far away overlooks the Nebrodi and the Rocche del Crasto. The Reserve embraces the Municipalities of Francavilla, Floresta and Patti.
The managing body is the Forestry Company. Under a dense wooded vegetation composed of ancient and tall specimens of Turkey oaks, hazelnuts, beeches, oaks, pines, a stream flows, the Licopedi of Roccella stream, which a little further down flows into the Alcantara.
The Malabotta Wood (700 - 1300 m asl) is an area of exceptional naturalistic value. It is a vast natural area between Roccella Valdemone and Montalbano Elicona, where an ecosystem rich in flora and fauna has spontaneously formed on sediments that are now clayey-arenaceous, now on alluvial and calcareous rocks. The reserve is dotted with numerous hills: Pizzo Castelluzzo, Serra Castagna, Pizzo Daniele and Pizzo Galera, now covered with dense woods, with centuries-old trees, now open to vast clearings inhabited by black pigs, now impervious streams where the rare trout reproduces macrostigma. Generally the wood is made up of oaks, pines, hazelnuts, chestnuts, poplars and maples, interrupted by splendid specimens of holly.
Further down, the holm oak. The undergrowth includes hawthorn, wild rose, spiny sparzio and offers shelter to foxes and wild boars, weasels and martens. The presence of the oak mouse is significant. For the birds, kestrels and peregrine falcons, buzzards, golden eagles, sparrow hawks.
Deviating from the road that leads to the Malabotta wood, you can easily access the Rocche of Argimusco, a plateau that rises to a height of over a thousand meters, with a view of Etna, the Strait of Messina and the Aeolian islands, on which they raise limestone megaliths that wind and rain have eroded giving them strange shapes. Another interesting excursion is the one to the Pittari wood, in the Municipality of Malvagna.
