Salita al cratere

Dal Porto di Levante fuoriuscire dal centro abitato in direzione sud-ovest sino alla fine della strada commerciale.
Dal fianco occidentale del cono vulcanico si diparte un grosso sentiero che sale con ampie svolte dalle quali cambia spesso il panorama sulle altre isole.
Il percorso è intervallato da profondi solchi irregolari ed un tratto del sentiero è caratterizzato dal colore rosso della terra vulcanica ossidata; ma il colore cambia una volta giunti sull’orlo de l cratere, difatti le fumarole sulfuree, con sostanziose quantità di zolfo, fanno predominare il colore giallo ocra e rosso, con costante presenza di cristalli dovuti al processo di condensazione dei fumi stessi.
Giunti sul bordo del cratere, è possibile farne il periplo e raggiungere il punto culminante del vulcano a quasi 400 metri sul livello del mare da cui il panorama spazia su tutto l’arcipelago eoliano.
Il vulcano non erutta dalla fine dell’ottocento, ma i segni della sua continua attività sono inequivocabili, difatti l’isola è costantemente monitorata da esperti che ne valutano le temperature ed i vari fenomeni che si palesano; anche questo rende Vulcano affascinante ed interessante.

Going up to the crater

From the Port of Levante come out of the inhabited center towards south-west until the end of the commercial road.
From the occidental side of the volcanic cone departs a large path that goes up with wide turns from which it often changes the panorama over the other islands.
The route has intervals with deep irregular furrows and a stretch of the path is characterized by the red colour of the volcanic tarnished land; but the colour changes once we reach the edge of the crater, in fact the sulphurous fumaroles, with substantial amounts of sulfur, are with predominant yellow ocher and red colours, with constant presence of crystals due to the process of condensation of smoke themselves.
Once at the crater rim, it is possible to border or go around the edge and reach the culminating point of the volcano about 400 meters above sea level where the view stretches over the Aeolian archipelago.
The volcano is not erupting from the late nineteenth century, but the signs of its continuing activities are clear, in fact the island is constantly monitored by experts who assess the temperatures and the various phenomena that are revealed, this also makes Vulcano fascinating and interesting.
