Castello Rufo Ruffo di Scaletta Zanclea

Il Castello Rufo Ruffo di Scaletta Zanclea è stato costruito nel 1220 per volontà di Federico II di Svevia. Sorge in una posizione strategica per il controllo dello stretto di Messina e del litorale jonico della Sicilia.

La massiccia struttura trapezoidale e la verticalità delle pareti sono alleggerite dalle due bifore superstiti poste sul lato sud dello splendido dongione che sovrasta il sottostante abitato di origine medievale. Nel 1969 i figli del Principe Rufo Ruffo lo donarono al Comune di Scaletta Zanclea che, con la collaborazione della Sovrintendenza ai Beni Culturali, ha realizzato il restauro della struttura.

 All'interno del castello è stato allestito un museo nel quale sono custoditi documenti cartacei che riguardano il territorio e le origini storiche dei vari feudatari del castello ed, in particolare, la nobile famiglia Ruffo.

 Di vivo interesse culturale sono i differenti tipi di medaglie e medaglioni religiosi oltre che una collezione di armi, armature, trofei di caccia ed oggetti marmorei disposti ad arte nei vari ambienti. Una piccola saletta ospita una serie di fotografie dei primi del '900 ed alcuni quadri raffiguranti il castello e i suoi personaggi.

 Il Museo del Castello è aperto ai visitatori tutto l'anno.

Rufo Ruffo Castle of Scaletta Zanclea

Rufo Ruffo Castle of Scaletta Zanclea was built in 1220 by the will of Frederick II of Swabia. It rises in a strategic position for the control of the Strait of Messina and the Ionian coast of Sicily.

The massive trapezoidal structure and the verticality of the walls are lightened by the two surviving mullioned windows placed on the south side of the splendid dungeon overlooking the underlying medieval town. In 1969 the sons of Prince Rufo Ruffo donated it to the Municipality of Scaletta Zanclea which, with the collaboration of the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, carried out the restoration of the structure.

Inside the castle a museum has been set up in which paper documents are kept concerning the territory and the historical origins of the various feudal lords of the castle and, in particular, the noble Ruffo family.

Of great cultural interest are the different types of medals and religious medallions as well as a collection of weapons, armor, hunting trophies and marble objects artfully arranged in the various environments. A small room houses a series of photographs from the early 1900s and some paintings depicting the castle and its characters.

The Castle Museum is open to visitors all year round.
