Castel di Mola di Castelmola

Posto su un altura che domina il paesaggio, alle origini era solo un primitivo luogo fortificato, che i romani provvidero a rafforzare ma fu solo in epoca bizantina che venne riedificato come fortezza, come testimonia la dicitura greco-bizantina incisa in una lapide marmorea sulla facciata del Duomo: “Questo castello fu costruito sotto Costantino, patrizio e stratega in Sicilia”;si tratta di Costantino Caramelo, stratega di Taurmenion.

Fu Ruggero I di Sicilia che eresse sul luogo un castello cui furono aggiunte delle poderose mura di cinta allo scopo di renderlo inaccessibile.

Sull'arco d'ingresso, è l'emblema di Castelmola (castello a tre torri) ed è riportata l'iscrizione: “Castello fedele a sua Maestà – anno 1578”; con riferimento a Filippo II di Spagna, sovrano di Sicilia.

Attualmente dell'antica fortificazione non restano che i ruderi delle mura normanne ma dalle rovine è possibile scorgere ed ammirare uno spettacolare panorama della Costa Jonica.

Castle of Mola of Castelmola

Placed on a hill that dominates the landscape, at the beginning it was only a primitive fortified place, which the Romans provided to strengthen but it was only in Byzantine times that was rebuilt as a fortress, as evidenced by the Greek Byzantine wording engraved in a marble plaque on the facade of the Cathedral: "This castle was built under Constantine, patrician and strategist in Sicily"; it is Constantine Caramelo, strategist of Taurmenion.

It was Roger I of Sicily who erected on the site a castle to which were added the powerful walls to make it inaccessible.

On the entrance arch, is the emblem of Castelmola (castle with three towers) and the inscription: "Castello fedele a sua Maestà - year 1578"; with reference to Philip II of Spain, King of Sicily.  

At present only the ruins of the Norman walls remain of the ancient fortification, but from the ruins it is possible to see and admire a spectacular panorama of the Ionian Coast.
