MIMMO ROTELLA
(Catanzaro 1918-Milano 2006). Artista e pittore italiano. Dopo la scuola media si trasferisce a Napoli ed intraprende gli studi artistici. Ottenuto un impiego statale si trasferisce a Roma, dove resta per un breve periodo. Nel 1994 ottiene il diploma al liceo artistico di Napoli ed insegna disegno a Catanzaro.Inizialmente dipnge quadri neo-geometrici; tra il ’45 ed il ’47 inizia a partecipare ad esposizioni.La prima mostra personale è nel 1951 a Roma ma non riscuote il favore della critica.Dopo questa esperienza ha un primo contatto con l’arte francese e tra il ’51 ed il ’52 ottiene una borsa di studio con la quale può permettersi di recarsi negli Stati Uniti. Conosce nuove persone e rappresentanti di correnti artistiche.Nel 1953, dopo problemi di salute, smette la sua opera pittorica convinto che l’arte non ha più nulla da dare ma subito dopo avviene quella che lui chiama: “illuminazione zen”, scopre il “decollage” definendo il manifesto pubblicitario come espressione artistica della città.I primi riconoscimenti arrivano nel 1956 ed il 1957, alla fine degli anni ’50 è etichettato “strappamanifesti” o “pittore della carta incollata”.Nel 1958 inizia un sodalizio artistico con Pierre Restany.La pop-art e l’espressionismo astratto sono di rilievo sull’orientamento di Rotella.Dopo vari avvenimenti importanti della sua vita, nel 1980 si trasferisce a Milano, dove elabora le “banks” o “copertine di affiches”. Dopo si ispira al graffitismo. Nel 2004 riceve la laurea honoris causa in architettura.Frequentò il Museo Santa Barbara di Mammola (RC), uno dei più importanti musei d’arte moderna, in cui si trovano numerose opere d’arte lasciate dall’artista.

L’opera “Viaggio a Mosca” del 1988 è il lavoro dell’artista Mimmo Rotella che più di tutti rappresenta il lungo percorso artistico dell’autore, individuato verso la seconda metà deglia anni ’80, dopo un nostalgico ritorno alla pittura su tela con soggetti cinematografici.Lo stile dell’artista riguarda interventi pittorici sui manifesti lacerati con la tecnica del decollage, (la cui invenzione nel 1953 lo ha reso famoso a livello internazionale) e applicati su supporto metallico.La sua internazionalità è dovuta alla lunga permanenza, trasgressiva e bohemienne dell’artista a Parigi e negli Stati Uniti e alla generosità nell’aver importato la sua arte in Italia. Ad egli è stato riconosciuto il ruolo di antesignano del “New Dada” in patria e di tramite tra le esigenze del nouveaux realisme e la pop-art; in questo ambito egli rivendica una indagine personale sul valore lirico dei messaggi massmediali, immagini- documento della nostra epoca. Mimmo Rotella - Artist and Italian painter was born in Catanzaro on October the 7th 1918 and died in Milan on Genuary the 8th 2006. After hig school he moved to Naples and took up the study of art. Got a civil service job, he moved to Rome where he remained for a short time. In 1944 he graduated from the Art School of Naples and taught drawing in Catanzaro. Initially paint pictures neo-geometric. Between ’45 and started partecipating in exhibitions. The first exhibition was in 1951 in Rome, but does not receive critical acclaim. After this experience has a first contact with the FrenchnArt and between ’51 and ’52 gets a scholarship with which it can afford to travel to the United States, here know new people and representatives of artistic currents. In 1953, after having had health problems, interrupts his pictorial work , convinced that art had nothing to give but, immediately after, what he calls “Zen Enlightenment”, discovers “Decollage” by defining the artvertising poster “Artistic expression of the city”. At the end of the ’50 is labeled as a ripper posters or painter of glued paper. The first awards come in 1956 and 1957. In 1958 he began an artistic collaboration with Pierre Restany. The pop art and abstract expressionism, are prominent orientation of Rotella. After several important events in his life, in 1980 he moved to Milan, where he elaborates the “Banks” or “Cover Affiche”. Following is inspired by graffiti art. In 2004 he received and honorary degree in architecture. He attended the Santa Barbara Museum of Mammola (RC) one of the most important Museums of Modern Art, which displays many works of art left by the artist.
TRIP TO MOSCOW - 1988 - oil and collage on sheet metal -The work “Trip to Moscow” in 1988, is the work of the artist Mimmo Rotella that most of all is the long artistic career of the author, identified in the second half of the ’80, after a nostalgic return to painting on canvas with film scripts. The style of the artist regards pictorial ripped posters with the technique of decollage, (whose invention in 1953 made him famous at international level) and applied on a metallic substrate. Its international character is due to the long stay, unconventional and bohemien artist in Paris and in the United States and generosity in having imported his art in Italy. For he has been recognized the role forerminer of the “New Dada” at home and a link between needs of the Nouveaux Realism and Pop Art, in this context, he claims a personal investigation on the lyrical value of mass media messages, images-document of our era.
