MARIO MAFAI
Mario Mafai è un esponente della corrente neorealista del dopoguerra.Mafai nacque a Roma nel 1902 e morì nel 1965. Nel 1921 insieme a Scipione ed Antonella Raphael iniziò un gruppo artistico che venne detto “Scuola Romana”. Dopo l’incontro con Raphael, esordì con due mostre importanti ed è in questo periodo che colpì il suo anti-impressionismo. Negli anni ’40 egli fu tra i promotori della ricerca neorealista di “Scuola Romana”. Negli anni della maturità , la pittura di Mafai documenta una sua personale rimeditazione sui temi del realismo che sfocerà nelle sedici tele con soggetti legati al mondo dei mercati rionali. Così in Ragazza del mercato il naturalismo aspro e drammatico di segno espressionista, degli anni giovanili di Mafai, attraverso zone dense e compatte di colore, sembra acquistare una nuova intensità morale, fondata sulla realtà, prima della svolta che nell’ultima fase della sua produzione lo condurrà alle soglie dell’astrattismo.

Mario Mafai - Is an exponent of the neorealist trend of the post-war period. Mario Mafai was born in Roma on the 1902 and he died on the 1965. In 1921 together with Scipione and Antonella Raphael he began an artistic group that was called “Roman School”. After the meeting with Raphael, he began with two important exhibitiones and in this period Mafai’s anti-impressionism impressed public opinion. In years forty, Mafai was one of promoters of “Roman school’s” neorealist research. In mature years, the Mafai’s painting shows a his personal reconsideration about themes of realism that will lead to sixteen canvases with subjects related to world of the local markets. So, in “Girl of market” the harsh and dramatic naturalism of expressionist mark of Mafai’s youthful years, through thick and compact zones of colour seems to have a new moral intensity, based on the reality, before of the turn that, in the last phase of his production, will lead him to the thresholds of abstractionism.
